Exodus 4:19 Now the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who wanted to kill you are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand.

21 The LORD said to Moses, “When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. 22 Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.’ ”

24 At a lodging place on the way,the LORD met Moses and was about to kill him. 25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it. “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me,” she said. 26 So the LORD let him alone. (At that time she said “bridegroom of blood,” referring to circumcision.)

This is a repeat of a May 2009 post with images from thebricktestament.com added.

Another bizarre story. God wants to kill Moses. Why? Who knows? Here is a link from Christian apologetics (http://www.apologeticspress.org/articles/2326). They conclude that Moses must have sinned in order for god to desire to kill him. Perhaps the sin was that he did not do what god asked him to do in the previous verses. Perhaps the sin was that he and his Midianite wife Zipporah had not circumcised their son. The fact is, this story does not provide the reason why god wants to kill Moses.

Nonetheless, Zipporah cuts off a part of her son’s penis and touches the blood to Moses’ feet. But was his feet actually his penis? My wife attended a conservative christian college and was told that the word “foot” or “feet” often was a euphamism for penis. Many conservative christian websites also note that, such as this one: http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/Christianity/2002/02/When-Foot-Means-Something-Else-Euphemisms-In-The-Bible.aspx.

Whether Zipporah puts penis blood on Moses’ feet or penis, the blood prevents god from killing Moses.

This story is bizarre and illogical.

  1. I agree that Moses stood to be killed because he was not following the law. Moses was called to perform a very difficult task. He was the one who would be tasked to lead the people to build the Tabernacle, to lead them into the Promised Land, to present the ten commandments to the people etc. But Moses’ disobedience (maybe his wife Zipporah was against circumcision) would create a big stumbling block to people and to all coming generations who would henceforward look up to Moses as a standard to follow. If you note this same thing happened to Ananias and Saphira because they blasphemed the Holy Spirit at a very crucial period in church history. This is my humble opinion!

  2. We came across your site looking for images of this story online after writing our own exegesis on it. Perhaps you want to take a look.

  3. does god seem a little too concerned with foreskins to you? if he existed i would think he was a perverted sadomasochist .
