Another Case of Offering Daughters so Mobs can Rape Them

Most of the other stories I have published were never or rarely read in Sunday school during my life. Some parts of Genesis 19 were told during Sunday school, in particular, the part about Lot’s wife turning into a pillar of salt.

I am including Genesis 19 because it is another case of a godly man offering his daughter(s) to a mob so they can rape them instead of a male guest in the house. It is very similar to the last story in Judges 19. My Sunday school classes did not mention the child abuse in this part nor the insest that occurs later.

Genesis 19
Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
1 The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
3 But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

9 “Get out of our way,” they replied. And they said, “This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

10 But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.

12 The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, 13 because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.”

14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them. 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords, please! 19 Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. 20 Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”

21 He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. 22 But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar. )

23 By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD. 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

Lot and His Daughters
30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father.”
33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I lay with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

Once again, men surround a house to rape a man’s male guests. Lot offers his virgin daughters to the mob so they can rape them instead. Verse 29 makes it clear that God saved Lot – so he get drunk and have sex with his daughters in verses 30 – 36.

Some say Lot was not at fault because he was drunk. This makes no sense on any level. Wrongs committed while drunk are still wrong. But also I know of no man who could get an erection while passed out from alcohol. I do not think it is medically possible.

  1. U obvious know nothing about manhood to claim that
“But also I know of no man who could get an erection while passed out from alcohol.”

Either that, or u do not know enough man.

By “know” i meant the biblical meaning of “know”, not just “hi-bye” know. 😛

    • Manhood is not defined by the ability to have sex while drunk on alcohol.

However, this is not about having sex while simply being drunk but by being passed out. “He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.” I stand by my statement that a man who is passed out could not have sex.

  2. […] God causing people to sacrifice their children or allowing Lot to offer his daughters to the mob to gang rape them. I didn’t mention how the Bible promotes xenophobia; homophobia and hatred towards […]

    • wich god? Do you know his name because there are many?

    • http://www.BIble.cc One GOD and He nor His Word Lord Willing condones no evil, Lord Willin Lord Forgive be i or any wrong or offbase

  3. God is not to be blamed nor Lot who tried to saved his male guests as a gesture of protection who came under his shelter

    • Saving a male guest is fine. Offering your female daughters to provide sex is order to do so is not.

  4. I accidentally came across your site while doing a Bible study. The Bible records (candidly at times) stories of the mistakes and wrongs that men did.. But nowhere does God condone or recommend such actions. Both of the cases you mentioned brought sad consequences for the perpetrators.
    Thanks for reading this!

    • God does many bizarre and horrible acts in the bible, including the genocide of the Amalakite and their babies, the genocide of the flood, the killing of Egyptian first born babies, killing a man for gathering sticks on the Sabbath (Num 15), etc. The god of the bible is one of the most wicked characters in all fiction.

      • Hello Mr. Hensley,
The Bible teaches that God is just and holy. The death sentence “The soul that sinneth, it shall die” is on all mankind because we have all broken God’s law. You can’t separate God’s justice from His goodness. His eyes can see the secret thought life, attitudes and motives behind every deed–good or bad. And a just God must punish evil…not just what we humans consider evil but anything that falls below His perfect standard of holiness.
That is why it is so amazing that His love has provided us a way to escape judgment–through the person of Jesus Christ. Christ took the judgment that we deserved so that, if we turn to Him, we could be forgiven.
Mr. Hensley, I do not pretend to understand all of God’s ways, nor am I trying to defend His actions–He certainly doesn’t need me to defend Him, and if I did understand everything about God, He wouldn’t be God. Please do search the Bible in its entirety– not just sections and bits–and find out what God has to say about Himself.
Ultimately, this issue is between you and Jesus Christ…but I felt led to respond to your comment. Thanks for reading this!

      • Thank you for your reply. The bible was written by men, is full of internal contradictions, and conflicts with history, science, and archaeology. Ultimately, this is an issue between you and reality. Thanks for reading this.

      • Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve been on here…..
As far as it being an issue between me and reality….I couldn’t agree with you more, Mr. Hensley. 🙂

I appreciate the opportunity I had to converse with you, and want you to know that I will and have been praying for you.

        Bye then!

      • Speckledlamb1993, well it wouldn’t really be saying much about God were he to deliberately create imperfect beings only to later condemn us for the imperfections that he bestowed. And for the record God is hardly a ‘just’ God. The fact that he routinely engaged in collective punishment is so utterly deplorable and wicked to such an extent that not even us lowly imperfect humans find such behavior acceptable, in fact WE usually call that a war crime when it takes place in times of conflict. And as far as what God has to say about himself, actions speak louder than words. Your God is callous, cruel, capricious, vindictive, jealous, petty, and puerile. None of which are attributed that I would ascribe to a merciful, benevolent and all loving God, not when he is content with consigning countless souls to hell all for what amounts to a thought crime

      • If He is just fiction, you spend a lot of time in complaining about Him.

      • Because it is time for people to stop believing in fairy tales. Because my state considered giving $18 million in tax rebates to a religious ministry. Because numerous studies show that children raised in non-religious environments end up better than those raised in religious environments in many different ways. Just a few of the many reasons.

  5. Oh, please. It’s obvious LOT RAPED HIS DAUGHTERS then blamed the victims.

  6. I’ve heard it stated as “to know them” instead of “to have sex with them” and that just makes it even creepier as it’s possible that “to know them” literally meant meeting them and finding out who they are. This paints a different image of the townspeople coming over to Lots house to meet the strangers and Lot being so offended by the idea of his “angels” being defiled by merely talking to the townspeople that he offers up his daughters as a bribe. Of course either way you translate it, the people Lot was supposedly protecting were freakin angels! Superhuman, magickal powers, flying, freaking angels. They could have wiped out the whole lot of them with a glance ffs!

    • Except Lot didn’t know they were angels at the time. Which doesn’t excuse him or anyone else one bit, only explains his trying to protect them – since to him as his guests they were worth more to him than his daughters.

      • No guests could ever be more valuable than my daughter (or my sons).

      • Or to me! But for a Bronze-Age misogynist asshole, that was about par for the course.

Blergh. Leave me to my atheism.

  7. I believe in The Trinity but have serious questions about the Bible and this is one of them. How can a man be able to perform if he was so drunk with alcohol that he didn’t remember what was going on? If he was so drunk the night before, why did he drink again the next night when he should have been so sick with a hangover that he wouldn’t have wanted to drink again unless he was an alcoholic? Where did the daughters get this stock pile of wine to give their father for two consecutive nights if they were living in a cave and all of their possessions were destroyed in Sodom? How convenient, both women had sons. What is the likelihood of both women not only becoming pregnant within a day apart but both had sons? The book of Peter says Lot is “pious” or “righteous” but if he was either of these things, why did he get so stupid drunk for two nights in a row, he was willing to give his virgin daughters to a group of perverted strangers so they could savagely rape them and he chose to stay in such a corrupt city? If Lot was wealthy, and many believe he was because he was “by the gate”, why did he continue to live in such a sinful city since he was such a “pious” and “righteous” man? I believe Lot was an alcoholic that raped his daughters and God saved “Lot’s family” for the sake of the daughters. The misogynist writers of the Bible covered up Lot’s dirty deeds and portrayed him as a victim. Additionally, there are seldom women heroines in the Bible and this is a perfect example of this point. Have you ever written about how women were worth less shekels than men in the Bible, Ed? I would enjoy hearing your comments if you decide to and if you already did, where may I find them? Thank you.

  8. It does not mean YHWH (God ) agreed with what Lot did! God is against rape and He said so in the bible.

    This will describe better:

    https://www.gotquestions.org/Lots-daughters.html

    • Lot is called a righteous man in the New Testament, but the link you provided does nothing to show Lot was righteous. The link you provided was a pathetic attempt to apologize for the embarrassingly immoral actions of a man your holy book calls righteous. It is a shame you and this apologist cannot simply honestly read this nonsense and realize that it is nothing more than Bronze Age mythology.

  9. Have you considered that the narrative in the bible about Lot may not have been accurate?

  10. Somebody has been fabricating a lot of lies against the Great Prophets of GOD and got it included in the Bible. I do not believe that GOD chose immoral men to send to teach us how to live a righteous life. The lying pen of the scribes have been busy.

  11. Pell Manager, you are a wonderful example of the kind of mindlessly indoctrinated religious zealot that will bend and twist and do outrageous mental gymnastics to avoid dealing with the embarrassing, disgusting and obviously immoral aspects of your “perfect book”. Here you are literally suggesting that one of the parts of the bible you can’t justify has been created by “lying scribes” and therefore cannot be considered a real part of the bible. You are living in a fantasy land of your own creation, aided and abetted by all the other delusional religious nuts in the world. Wake up and realize that the bible was written by bronze age men, not a god, who wrote down stories that reflected their personal beliefs and attitudes derived from the time in which they lived. By the standards of that time there was not much to really object to, but by today’s standards much of it is immoral and awful. We judge those stories by today’s standards, except for christians, who are forced to do this mental tap dance to try to justify these disgusting morals and actions, or to deny their validity through claims of misunderstood “context”, translation errors, or “lying scribes”. It is pathetic to see modern people have to subjugate their own, modern morals to try to justify the outdated and immoral standards of thousands of years ago. Do yourself a favour and try to reconnect with your critical thinking skills to see through the absolute mountain of nonsense and immorality in your bible and religion in general.
